When God called me, I did not get advice or help from any person. He called me through his grace 16 and showed his son to me so that I might tell the Good News about him to those who are not Jewish. I tried harder than anyone else to follow the teachings handed down by our ancestors.ġ5 But God had special plans for me and set me apart for his work even before I was born. 14 I was becoming a leader in the Jewish religion, doing better than most other Jews of my age. I attacked the church of God and tried to destroy it. 12 I did not get it from humans, nor did anyone teach it to me, but Jesus Christ showed it to me.ġ3 You have heard about my past life in the Jewish religion. Paul’s Authority Is from Godġ1 Brothers and sisters, I want you to know that the Good News I preached to you was not made up by human beings. Am I trying to please people? If I still wanted to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. If anyone is preaching something different to you, let that person be judged guilty!ġ0 Do you think I am trying to make people accept me? No, God is the One I am trying to please. So if we ourselves, or even an angel from heaven, should preach to you something different, we should be judged guilty! 9 I said this before, and now I say it again: You have already accepted the Good News. But some people are confusing you they want to change the Good News of Christ. So I am amazed that you are turning away so quickly and believing something different than the Good News. I was made an apostle through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Jesus from the dead. I was not chosen to be an apostle by human beings, nor was I sent from human beings. He clearly is not doing that.1 From Paul, an apostle. Otherwise, Paul implies, he would simply go along with the Judaizers. Paul now answers that charge: If he were really trying to please men instead of God, would he have just pronounced as cursed anyone who taught a gospel message other than the one he taught them? Look at the evidence, he says. They suggested Paul was just a people-pleaser, willing to alter the truth in order to be liked. In addition, they seem to have suggested that Paul did not require these Gentiles to follow the law of Moses because he was trying to make everyone happy. This raises a question: how did they convince these Gentile (non-Jewish) believers Paul was wrong?įor one, they apparently questioned whether Paul was a "real apostle," something Paul will answer in the following verses. To be truly saved, you must also follow the law of Moses. They had begun to convince the Galatian Christians that more was required. As he will say later in this letter, to suggest that we must do more to be truly saved is to make Jesus' death on the cross meaningless (Galatians 2:21).Ī group known as the Judaizers had moved in after Paul left. As he expressed it in Ephesians 2:8–9, we are saved by faith through grace, not by any works we do. Paul began his letter to the Galatian Christians by telling them again the simple gospel message: Jesus died to pay for our sins and to deliver us (Galatians 1:4).
